Homecoming @ Burger Study.

The Indy Burger Guy visited Burger Study in downtown Indianapolis on Wednesday, July 18, 2018.

Even before they finally opened, I was intrigued by Burger Study.  And what’s not to be intrigued by?  A new burger-centric restaurant concept from the people behind St. Elmo’s Steakhouse and Harry and Izzy’s!  However, I was never able to find the time to get there.  So, when my wife asked where I wanted to go for my birthday dinner this year, I opted for Burger Study.  The fact that Savor Downtown Indy had started just a couple days prior just sweetened the deal!

The ambiance of Burger Study is one of humble elegance.  The decor works in a great deal of wood and the servers are dressed in a manner that suggests high-class comfort.  We came dressed relatively casually (I wore a polo shirt and a pair of jeans) and did not feel at all out of place.

There are a wide variety of burgers on the Burger Study menu, ranging from the very basic (Freshman, the closest to a basic cheeseburger on the menu) to the downright opulent (Doctorate, which comes topped with foie gras and triple creme brie).  For my first foray into the realm of Burger Study, I chose to split the difference and go with Homecoming, a burger both elegant and simple.

On paper, Homecoming is a bacon cheeseburger.  However, along with standard burger toppings like shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, and mayonnaise, this burger is topped with melted smoked Gouda cheese and thick-cut, root beer-glazed bacon.  And when I say ‘thick-cut,’ I mean it – this is more like rashers of slab bacon or sliced pork belly than what you or I might conventionally call ‘bacon.’

I’ll go right out and say it – this was a delicious burger!  The smokiness of the cheese paired excellently with the sweet porky goodness of the root beer-glazed bacon, creating a truly wonderful balance of flavor.  The beef is simply seasoned in such a way that doesn’t overwhelm the taste, but allows it to take center stage as the true star of this sandwich…. which is nice, because Burger Study uses 100% USDA Prime Black Angus for all their beef burgers! (They even go so far as to use St. Elmo’s dry-aged beef for their Prime Degree and Doctorate burgers.)

My only major complaint was eatability.  On my first bite, the burger kind of… exploded all over me.  It didn’t make too major a mess, but did make for a difficult eating process.  After I’d finished the burger, there was a small ‘salad’ of shredded lettuce and tomato juices left over on my plate (which is not particularly preferable).

All told, Homecoming is one of the best burgers I’ve ever had in my burger journey through Indy.  I look forward to future trips to try some of the other plentiful burger options Burger Study has to offer.  (When selecting your side dish, I highly recommend the potato salad – it was delicious!)
