It’s Nacho Burger @ Between the Bun.

There’s been a lot of Between the Bun popping up on this blog of late and, quite frankly, it’s a wonder every post on this page hasn’t been a Between the Bun review since I moved to the south side of Indy last fall.  There’s a level of quality and creativity at Between the Bun that few other burger establishments in Indy are able to capture.  Given that and their proximity to my home, it’s quite an easy spot to frequent and I’m always glad to give them my business.

I mentioned previously that Between the Bun does a (mostly) monthly Burger of the Moment – a rotating selection of burgers that offer something outside the main menu for clientele looking to capitalize on the creativity for which this place is known.  For July’s BotM, the fine folks at BtB put it to their Facebook fans to decide their latest in the rotation and the people chose… It’s Nacho Burger!

Once upon a time, I’ve been given to understand that this was a staple on the Between the Bun menu but it’s been left off the last couple of menu upgrades, so when votes like this go out amongst the fandom, this burger always seems to win the day.  Given that kind of popularity, I thought it high time I get one for myself.  Additionally, my father had yet to visit and so I suggested we go for lunch on a day I had off work… which also happened to be my birthday.  In other words, the perfect excuse.

It’s Nacho Burger is a half-pound patty flame-grilled burger topped with nacho cheese Doritos, melted shredded cheddar jack cheese, diced white onions, pickled jalapeño slices, and a drizzle of spicy sour cream, served on a toasted brioche bun.  I must admit, the whole thing is a bit daunting when it comes to your table, but smashing the chips a bit with the bun does a good job of making the whole thing more manageable to eat.

Personally, I can see why the clamor for this burger exists – it’s quite tasty!  The Doritos provide a nice bit of texture, while the melted cheese (which sits amid the chips rather than atop the burger proper) acts as a binding agent which keeps the broken chips from spilling out of the burger, making it surprisingly eatable.  The jalapeños provide a nice kick which is not the least bit overwhelming given the cooling smoothness of the sour cream.  This burger achieves the balance that I lamented the lack of in my previous BtB review and I am grateful for it!

The burger did come a bit overdone for my liking (I generally order medium and mine came medium well), but that is just about the extent of the qualms I have with this one.  It’s a really nicely balanced burger that will no doubt leave you satisfied by meal’s end.  However, as this is not a regular menu item, I suggest you get into Between the Bun before the end of the month and find out how tasty this burger is!

(By the way, my father had the BTB Classic – a good ol’ fashioned American cheeseburger – and really seemed to enjoy it!  He inquired about a veggie burger on the menu for my vegetarian mother, so I have a sneaking suspicion he’ll want to make a repeat trip some time soon!)
