I’ve said it before and I’ll likely say it again: Between the Bun has become one of my favorite places in Central Indiana to grab a burger! I’m not sure if it’s the creativity and obvious joy put into every burger creation, the consistently high quality of the ingredients they use, or the comfortable atmosphere and friendly service – I have yet to have a bad experience here! Since moving to the south side of Indy back in September, it’s even a burger place I can convince my wife to go to (as she is not as ardent a burger lover as I tend to be).
One thing I’ve not explored thus far on BtB’s menu has been their “Burger of the Moment,” a rotating monthly burger option in addition to their expansive and creative catalogue of burger options. Past options have included former menu favorites (like their Nacho Cheese Burger which comes with queso and Nacho Cheese Doritos) or some creative new options (like the Crunch Burger, topped with potato chips, housemade french onion dip, and smoked gouda cheese).
Having tried many of BtB’s standard menu options during the blog’s hiatus, I was definitely in the mood for something new when I stopped in for lunch in early May. My waitress recommended the current Burger of the Moment – the Brickyard Burger! Named for that famed location in Speedway, IN that houses “the Greatest Spectacle in Racing” at the end of every May, the Brickyard was a powerhouse burger! It’s a deep-fried burger patty topped with melted Cheddar cheese, deep-fried Wisconsin cheese curds, crispy strips of smoky bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and their house special Spitfire Ranch sauce, all served on a pretzel bun.
I’ve always been intrigued about the prospect of a deep-fried burger, so I was keen to give it a try. Because the burger comes deep-fried, my waitress informed me that it would be difficult to get my burger to the desired medium and that medium-well would be more likely. I was fairly nervous at this prospect but, as it turns out, I really didn’t need to me. The deep fry cooking method imparted a rich juiciness to the burger that kept it from drying out even at the medium-well doneness.
Between the deep-fried patty, the salty bacon, and the deep-fried cheese curds, this quickly becomes a very decadent and very rich burger! Fortunately, the spiciness of the Spitfire Ranch sauce and the acidity of the pickle really helps to cut through a lot of the fat and richness which helps to provide some measure of balance to what might otherwise be a very overwhelming burger.
And, speaking of overwhelming, I was pleasantly surprised to find that a burger with so many toppings was extremely eatable. I give a lot of the credit for that to the pretzel bun, which not only keeps all the toppings precisely in place, but also delivers in the texture department. This bun was not as overly-chewy like a lot of pretzel buns tend to be, which provided both great texture and great support for this loaded burger!
All told, this comes out to be a very tasty burger and one I would recommend to anyone who might want to try it. However, the Burger of the Moment is temporary by its very nature and, as such, cannot always be with us. FORTUNATELY, however, Between the Bun has recently overhauled their menu and, in addition to streamlining their burger options (including removing the previously-reviewed Thai One On – a travesty to my thinking), they’ve added four new burgers to their regular rotation, including the Brickyard Burger! So why not swing by Between the Bun and give this burger a try the next time you’re on your way through Greenwood!
