Tomorrow, August 8th, marks the one-year anniversary of my very first review (of the Twin Steer @ The Historic Steer-In) so, in honor of this landmark, I’m going to recap some of the best burgers I’ve had the pleasure of eating over the last 365 days. (You can see how every other burger I’ve tried stacks up by checking out my Burger Rankings page.) While there’s no new review going up this week, be sure to check out these blasts from the past and stop by next week for another new burger review! Thanks so much for your support over the past year!
(NOTE – Most of these are ties. As such, I’ve ordered them by score first, then in alphabetical order. FYI.)
11. Yo! @ B Spot Burgers – 9.0
Eaten: Tuesday, July 19, 2016
Reviewed: Monday, August 15, 2016
The second burger I ever reviewed and my first trip to B Spot, this deli-inspired burger – topped with fried salami, capicola, banana peppers, and melted provolone cheese – became an early Indy Burger Guy favorite!
Peanut butter… on a burger?! Sure enough! Alongside bacon, jalapenos, and melted cheddar, peanut butter provides a sweet and salty balance that enhances all the elements of this well-crafted burger.
9. Damn Burger @ The Sinking Ship – 9.0
Eaten: Sunday, March 12, 2017
Reviewed: Monday, March 27, 2017
This no-frills burger from a near-North Side ‘high-end dive bar’ packs serious flavor! With a patty that’s seasoned like a steak, fresh ingredients, and one of the best non-brioche buns I’ve tasted, you could do a lot worse than this burger!
8. The Cookie Monster @ Between the Bun – 9.0
Eaten: Saturday, July 15, 2017
Reviewed: Monday, July 24, 2017
Peanut butter, sure… but cookie butter? The madmen at Between the Bun outdo themselves by taking the Shewman formula and changing it up with cookie butter and sriracha as the sweet and spicy elements. The result? Delicious!
7. Cheeseburger @ BoxBurger – 9.0
Eaten: Monday, September 19, 2016
Reviewed: Monday, October 24, 2016
My first foray into burger food truck glory is still my favorite! This burger is as simple as they come – two smashed patties with melted white American cheese and standard fixins – but the result is a truly fantastic burger!
6. Bru Burger @ BRU Burger Bar – 9.0
Eaten: Saturday, December 18, 2016
Reviewed: Monday, December 26, 2016
BRU Burger Bar has become a regional staple and, with burgers like this, it’s not hard to see why! Topped with bacon, tomato jam, and caramelized onions, along with melted Taleggio cheese, their namesake burger is a force with which to be reckoned.
5. The Thai One On @ Between the Bun – 9.1
Eaten: Sunday, June 4, 2017
Reviewed: Monday, June 19, 2017
Similar to a burger a couple spots down, the Thai One One demonstrates the commitment to quality and creativity. Topped with sauteed jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, bacon, and sriracha ranch, this burger is a must for those who love spice!
4. Porky @ B Spot Burgers – 9.1
Eaten: Thursday, August 11, 2016
Reviewed: Monday, September 5, 2016
This towering behemoth might not have cheese (the mound of coleslaw covers for that), Porky also includes a mound of pulled pork and a housemade barbecue sauce to create a unique and tasty burger experience!
3. Flamme Burger @ Flamme Burger – 9.1
Eaten: Friday, December 30, 2016
Reviewed: Monday, January 23, 2017
With roasted serrano chiles, Swiss cheese, bacon, and sriracha mayo, the Flamme Burger shares a lot in common with the Thai One On, but the wood flame cooking of really helps to give Flamme Burger a little extra ‘oomph!’
2. 317 Burger @ 317 Burger – 9.1
Eaten: Tuesday, March 28, 2017
Reviewed: Monday, April 10, 2017
What can I say? I like it cheesy! Complete with four cheeses – Swiss, provolone, Gouda, and America – plus bacon and garlic aioli, the name burger at 317 Burger really delivers a unique burger experience!
1. Double Cheeseburger @ The Workingman’s Friend – 9.2
Eaten: Friday, December 23, 2016
Reviewed: Monday, January 9, 2017
The best cheeseburger in Indy (so far)! One of the very few truly transcendent burger experiences I’ve been blessed to have over the past year! Two smashed patties with melted American cheese and a ‘moist-maker’ middle bun that actually serves a purpose! Try it with the onion rings!
